Why We Love Ponyo

The story of Ponyo (directed by Hayao Miyazki)  is for you if you’re looking for a sweet story of a girl who does anything to live her life, her way. I absolutely loved this film. The characters are loveable, the storyline is certainly one-of-a-kind, and there’s always a new adventure around the corner for main characters Ponyo and Soskuke. If you love magic, adventure, and want to view the world with that special childlike wonder for roughly an hour and a half, Ponyo is streaming on Netflix now!

Why is Ponyo So Popular?

It’s easy to fall in love with! The characters are the cutest, drawn with just enough detail to give them all their own distinct style. While we might not always agree with their motivations (looking at you driving, mom), Ponyo certainly has us laughing each time she learns or explores something new!

It’s also incredibly uplifting and focused on positive outcomes. It leaves anything dark or negative to some of the other incredible Studio Ghibli films, and tells the story of a little girl with the best intentions, who just wants to live her authentic life! Something all of us can relate to. I especially loved her sense of adventure, her willingness to try new things, help other people, and learn as much as she can.

Favourite Quotes

One of the best parts of Ponyo is the dialogue and listening to the characters and their witty remarks! Here’s a collection of my favourite Ponyo quotes. Add yours in the comments.

  • “I’d let a fish lick me if it’d get me out of this wheelchair.”
  • “Put that thing back in the ocean, don’t you know it will cause a tsunami?”
  • “Ponyo loves Soskuke!”
  • “It’s haaaaaaaaaam!”

Where to Watch Ponyo Online

The best place to watch Ponyo online is currently Netflix, which has many Studio Ghibli films. This way you can watch it with the best quality and free of ads (depending on your account level). Watch the trailer on Netflix here now!

Studio Ghibli Directors and their Films

Studio Ghibli directors play a key role in shaping the unique styles of the films, allowing them to remain magical, and yet distinct. According to Studio Ghibli’s Wikipedia page, two of the key people involved in Studio Ghibli were its two main directors: directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. And while Hayao Miyazaki certainly directed the bulk of films, Studio Ghibli has 7 main directors. Over nearly a 40 year span, Studio Ghibli has welcomed a total of 29 directors across its 22 films.

Reviewed here are the main 7 Studio Ghibli directors and their films.

Studio Ghibli Directors

Hayao Miyazaki

As co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki directed 11 different films. A screenwriter as well as a director, Mr. Miyazaki won several awards including best animated feature.

  1. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
  2. Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986)
  3. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
  4. Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)
  5. Porco Rosso (1992)
  6. Princess Mononoke (1997)
  7. Spirited Away (2001)
  8. Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)
  9. Ponyo (2008)
  10. The Wind Rises (2013)
  11. The Boy and the Heron (2023)

My favourite films are almost all from Hayao Miyazaki. What about yours?

Isao Takahata

The next co-founder of Studio Ghibli is director Isao Takahata, who directed fewer films for Studio Ghibli but accomplished many other works outside of it.

  1. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
  2. Pom Poko (1994)
  3. The Tale of Princess Kayuga (2013)

Gorō Miyazaki

The son of Hayao Miyazaki, Gorō Miyazaki, directed 3 films when he started working for Studio Ghibli in 2006.

  1. Tales of the Earthsea (2006)
  2. From Up on Poppy Hill (2011)
  3. Earwig and the Witch (2020)

Hiromasa Yonebayashi

Hiromasa Yonebayashi was one of the youngest directors produced by the studio, after being involved in several earlier films as an animator.

  1. The Secret World of Arrietty (2010)
  2. When Marnie Was There (2014)

I have to admit, Arrietty has a special place in my heart, and is so far the only film in my favourites list that wasn’t directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Tomomi Mochizuki

Director, screenwriter, and storyboard artist Tomomi Mochizuki occasionally goes by the alias Gō Sakamoto. He directed Studio Ghibli’s first feature-length film for television, known as ‘I Can Hear the Sea’ in Japan and went on to work in several more studios.

  1. Ocean Waves (1993)

Yoshifumi Kondō

Director Yoshifumi Kondō was involved in several well known projects beyond Studio Ghibli as an animator, including another Studio Ghibli film ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’. He was expected to continue his rise in the Studio Ghibli company, but unfortunately passed away.

  1. Whisper of the Heart (1995)

Michaël Dudok de Wit

Although last on the list, Michaël Dudok de Wit’s participation in Studio Ghibli is another milestone for the studio. As the only non-Japanese leading director to date, Dudok de Wit’s contribution ‘The Red Turtle’ is unique in more ways than one. It’s also the only feature without any dialogue!

  1. The Red Turtle (2016)

What’s next for Studio Ghibli?

With more films on the horizon, Studio Ghibli is not done yet! As movie reviews are available on the website, the movie titles above will be linked and more content about the directors will be added. For now, I’d love to hear from you in the comments! Who is your favourite Studio Ghibli director, and why?
